We find out we are Pregnant!

I started to “feel” pregnant the week of August 9th, 2010. I was out of town for a class for work and I was having a really hard time keeping focused in class each day. And every afternoon I just felt completely exhausted. However, I knew it was too early to test. Sean and I had been trying for a few months and we felt like this time we made it happen at the right moment in time in order for egg and sperm to meet. So I was pretty confidant to begin with, but the tiredness that I was feeling really made me feel pretty sure that we’d accomplished our goal. When I got home that Friday night, I told Sean that we would have to do a test the next morning because I was pretty sure that it would be positive. We were very excited!

The next morning, Saturday, August 14th, I woke up and did a pregnancy test. At first it looked like it was going to be negative. The control line showed up really quickly and since I didn’t have my contacts in yet, I couldn’t see the faint line that was appearing in the test area. But after a few minutes I could tell that there was a faint line there. I went back into the bedroom where Sean was still sleeping and woke him up to look at it. (I’m sure just the thing he wanted in his face in the morning….but I needed a second opinion!) “Well….I think we are pregnant.” I said. “Do you see the line?” He saw it but was concerned that maybe it was faulty since the line was so faint. I didn’t think so since I had never gotten a faint line in the test area before on any previous tests. This was definitely a line in my mind, but we agreed to test again the next morning.

Sunday, August 15th, I tested again, and this time the line was still faint but a little darker than the test the day before. So we figured it must be right. We figured maybe we should wait until the Doctor’s visit before sharing the news with family. However, the next day when I called Kaiser to get an appointment, they told me that they wouldn’t see me until 8 weeks!!! I was only 4 weeks along at this point, so I didn’t see how we could keep it a secret from my family until then. I set my appointment for Sept. 13th and we are waiting for that day! The good news is that they told us that we will get to have an ultrasound and hopefully will get to see the baby’s heartbeat that day too. We are very excited! But it still feels so far away!

August 17th I called my mom. She must have ESP or something because she already knew what we were calling to tell her. She and my dad are both very excited to be grandparents again for the 5th time!

August 18th is my brother Greg’s birthday so we called him and wished him a happy birthday as well as let him and Janet know our news. They seemed like they weren’t expecting it so it was fun to tell them. They also are very excited for us. Janet immediately got online that night and ordered me a copy of “The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy”, which I received a couple days later. So thoughtful!

August 20th is my sister-in-law Melinda’s birthday, so we called her to wish her a happy birthday and I let Sean break the news to Mel. She was completely NOT expecting it and SCREAMED on the phone! Needless to say, she is also very excited! (She has also been telling us to have babies ever since our wedding 2 ½ years ago, so she has been waiting for this day!) She definitely had the best reaction of anyone that we have told so far.

Tim, Mel and their kids Natalie and William came up to visit us the week after we called them and told them our news. It was a planned trip already but since they knew about the pregnancy, they brought Sean a book called “The Expectant Father”. So now Sean and I both have good books to read. My brother John also came up to visit that weekend. So we had a full house of guests. It was a lot of fun. We visited with our Oregon family a lot, Grandma Rees, Uncles Roger and Stephen and their families. We told my brother John, my Grandma Rees and my Uncles family’s during their visit.

One day that they were here we went to the Portland Zoo. That was a lot of fun. The kids really enjoyed seeing all the animals and running around. Natalie, John and I even took the MAX (light-rail) train home! Another day we went to the Oregon Coast one day, although it was not a good day for showing off how gorgeous the coast is here. Unfortunately it was cold, windy and rainy while we were there and so we did not stay for very long. I did get a chance to let Tank and Nova run around a bit though. They love the beach. I could tell that they were not happy that we left so soon after arriving. The dogs didn’t mind the cold and rain, but we humans did! A couple of hot chocolates later and we were back on the road to Hillsboro!

While they were here Natalie was very interested about my pregnancy. She leaned over to Sean and whispered, “I heard my mommy say Auntie Jen’s going to have a baby!” As if it was news to Sean. =) It was really cute. She also asked me about the baby in my belly and I told her that it was really really small at this point (6 weeks). I showed her illustrated pictures of an embryo and fetus from the internet and showed her how the baby starts out really really tiny and doesn’t really even look like a baby, but then it grows and grows and changes into looking like a little baby. I started with the picture below (7 weeks - from BabyCenter.com) - since it is starting to look less like just a blob of cells. She thought that was pretty interesting. Thankfully she didn’t ask how the baby got there in the first place! =)

One of the best things was how great the dogs did with the kids. They were very gentle and didn’t try to nip or bark at them at all. Sean and I were very happy about that! Hopefully that means we won’t have such a hard time adjusting them to our new little one.

Well , that is just the start of our visitors. This weekend is Labor Day and my parents are coming to visit for 6 days! I can’t wait to see them and have them see the house. Last time they were up here we had just walked through the house with them and put in an offer. So now they can see all the changes we’ve made with paint on the inside and ripping up the backyard too.
